A Message From Mayor Richard Bain

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This is an update regarding the Brainard/Shaker Circle closure. Dominion Energy’s contractors continue the extensive infrastructure repairs required prior to filling the hole, installing new pavement and opening the circle. As you know, the work to replace the gas transmission line was completed and attention turned to restoring the other infrastructure damaged under the roadway by the explosion and fire. That work includes repair and replacement of major storm water structures, including a massive concrete underground culvert which channels water underground across the circle. Crews have been pouring concrete to rebuild that approximate 100’ long, 10’x6’ structure which has foot thick reinforced walls. Work on that continues this week with the top of the structure being formed and poured. Repair and replacement of other storm water structures and waterlines also are being addressed.

Opening of the circle is now estimated for the end of January/early February. The weather has been helpful, but this date is obviously weather dependent and subject to unforeseen events. This is a major construction project and we continue to monitor Dominion to complete the work in a safe and expeditious fashion. Hopefully, at least one operating lane can be established to get the circle working again as soon as possible, but a good deal of work needs to first be done even for that. Thank you for your continued patience.

Sincerely,

Richard Bain
