Protect Yourself from Coronavirus Scams

Scammers are already exploiting COVID-19 by hyping bogus products, touting sketchy investments and pumping out malware-laden emails.  Watch out for these signs to avoid COVID-19 scams:

  • Only imposter scammers will demand you pay debts, fines or fees with:
    1. Money wires
    2. E-currencies such as Bitcoin
    3. Retail or e-tail gift cards
  • Scammers usually want money or your personal information.   Watch out for scams disguised as:
    1. Offers to help get you stimulus payments or grants.
    2. Threats to arrest you or seize your accounts.
    3. Offers to help you get Coronavirus tests, cures or vaccines.
    4. Calls or emails from the police, IRS or any government agency.
  • A job is a scam if your new “employer” tells you to:
    1. Deposit a check and then send funds – in any form – to someone else.
    2. Create a bank or e-currency account for the “company”.
    3. Accept or make payments by money wire, gift cards or e-currency.
    4. Accept and reship mail or packages.

If you think you may be a victim of a COVID-19 scam, reach out to the Cuyahoga County Consumer Affairs Scam Squad at 216-443-SCAM(7226).  Or you can go to their website at www.consumeraffairs.cuyahogacounty.us
